In one week's time my 31st birthday will be upon me - yipee!  A time for indulgence, treats and personal gratification.  I like to milk my birthday for what it's worth and I allow myself guilt-free requests such as magazines, pampering, new clothes and anything else that takes my fancy.  Okay, it's not that different from the norm but it's always an enjoyable time never the less.  :-)

For a bit of fun I thought I'd look through the virtual shopping aisles and pick out my favourite lingerie and homeware pieces.  There's nothing quite like a bit of imagination splurging!

First to go into my birthday basket is the Freya 'Beau' bra set (28H) in the new colourway, Lollipop, due out February (how convenient?!)  When the 'candy' Beau came out last year it did nothing for me, in fact the colour made me dislike it.  Now it's going to be in this juicy, fruity pink colour, I love it!  I'm obsessed!
Freya 'Beau' collection in Lollipop

I love burning candles and my favourite brand is by far Yankee Candle.  I've been enjoying them for about twelve years now and I'm as yet to come across such quality home fragrances elsewhere.  Having sniffed a sneak peek of forthcoming scents I knew I'd want A Child's Wish when it comes out.  It's floral but really fresh and spring-like.

I think cushions are one of those things I'm pretty obsessed about.  I fall for cushions so easily and so often, my sofas and bedroom are a crazy mismatch array of cushions!  This cushion would definitely live in the bedroom: it's awesome.  The very Party Ring-esque Celebration Biscuit cushion by Sass and Belle.

Then I would be sure to throw in the Nadin bra set by Comexim.  The design and colours are so unusual but vibrant and girly.  I love it!  I've been afraid to buy overseas though as I'm not sure what size I'd need to order.

Comexim Nadin collection

Buying a new handbag is one of my favourite past times and Nica has regularly been my go-to brand.  I've lost count how many I've bought!  I just love the texture of their fabrics and the lovely colours they use.  I would love the shoulder bag from their Nica Play range in green.  Yum!

Some shades of pink can be a bit wimpy but when I saw this clock I was smitten with the hot pink.  I can't stop looking at this Acctim clock called Lorene.  The other half probably wouldn't be very impressed but I'd be thrilled to see it everyday!

As I'm a list freak (you wouldn't believe how many lists I have on the go at any one time) stationary is always of huge interest to me, particularly pads of paper and notebooks.  I didn't see this on Dotcomgiftshop until today: the pretty Vintage Doily sticky memo pads set.  I would so enjoy myself writing up my things to do!

I've been cross stitching for 15 years and recently taken to making cushions and little cute home decorations so storage for my needles and crafty tools is essential.  Currently my boxes are practical and far from pretty so it would be nice to have some attractive storage solutions.  Button It is so far up my street, I'm sure it was made just for me.  The gorgeous colours and covetable silver buttons make them absolutely yummy.  This hot pink polka dot sewing box would be perfect for my most important bits and pieces.  Mmmm, yes please!

At one point we Brits ruled the world.  The goods we consumed and traded were made by our own fair hands and considered some of the finest quality in manufacture.  We bought British because it stood for the best, our livelyhoods depended on the presence of the working factory and the union flag was our symbol that represented the British stronghold and we were proud of it.  Then we fell out of love with Britain as we were seduced by quicker foreign imports, lower prices and our demands for instant gratification before quality and substance grew into our throw away society where we no longer cherished what we wrenched with our hands.  Made in Britain was lost.

Thankfully, in strange homage to the days of the war, through our recent modern financial crisis we've re-ignited our interest with rites of passage we all used to live by.  The 'Make Do and Mend' revival has brought sentimentality and appreciation of what little we have.  British became trendy.  Made in Britain was back.

If you watched the Channel 4 show, Mary's Bottom Line, you'll recognise the name Kinky Knickers.  Mary Portas decided that enough was enough with our love of outsourced manufacture (yes, even stout British brand Marks and Spencer make their briefs in Sri Lanka: I know, I've just checked!), we had to bring our skilled trades back and fire up the factories that once were our country's backbone.  So, Mary set about the inception of the new intimate apparel-wear to be crafted by British hands and using the finest British fabric.

Having watched the series myself, I was so excited to find out what Kinky Knickers were really like.  I received two ridiculously cute boxes with the 50s stylised retro branding featuring a cheeky pin up girl. The detail in the packaging alone will stop you from putting the box out in the recycling bag!  Opening the box up you're instructed to 'Show your knickers'; Kinky Knickers are not shy about their product.

Cute 'n' Retro Packaging

Inside the little box

I was sent the scalloped edge Kinky Knickers which retail for £15 each: the Pink with Red and the Black with Cobalt Blue.  Both colourways are beautiful and vibrant.  My knickers are a size Small and they fit perfectly on my size 12 bum.

The Pink/Red and the Black/Coral Blue knickers

I was massively impressed when I took the knickers out of the box, I was honestly expecting the lace to feel coarse and it wasn't.  The main body of the knickers are so soft and the scalloped lace edging is substantial and doesn't feel like it'll come loose at the seams.  All of the lace used is authentic Nottingham lace which is totally stretchy.  From watching the tv show I knew the people who constructed and stitched the knickers were training apprentices whose pasts made me dubious of the potential quality and workmanship: I'm eating my own words to say they are really, really well made.

The knickers do feel rather comfy.  I don't wear lacy knickers on a daily basis but these are by far some of the comfiest lace knickers I've worn.  They sit low on the tummy but are deep cut so hug your hips and cover your bum.  The gusset felt a little bulky to me, I'm not sure whether there's slightly too much fabric down there.

Kinky Knickers fly the flag for the Made in Britain brand which is something I passionately believe in promoting.  God save Kinky Knickers!

"You're not curvy, you're fat!"
"You're too skinny to be curvy!"

Curves.  We love them.  We hate them.  Gok Wan really loves them.  And often, we get curves all wrong.  The thing about curves is that they're not size specific, yet time and time again the term is misused and abused to mock the bigger figure and defeminise the thin.  And while we debate the true meaning, we miss the real point that curves or not, we are what we've got.

Growing up, it was a regular reality that I was bullied for this, that and the other.  I was often picked on for my slim frame; my skinny legs, undeveloped chest and titchy waist, and 'anorexic' was a common name for me.  Fast forward a few years and I have the figure I thought would never come to fruition.  I'm not exactly skinny anymore but these days I have boobs, hips and a bum; a shapely hour glass figure I would call curvy.  But I'm not the only type of curvy.  Think Boux Avenue's plus size hotty, Robyn Lawley who is a size 16.  Kelly Brook is another curvy kitten wearing a size 8-10.  Both are curvy yet classified differently.  A size 16 is typically vilified where a size 10 isn't.  What's going on?

Robyn Lawley for Boux Avenue

There's an article in the Daily Mail Online about the proliferation of the plus size market.  It opens with a discussion about celebrities who have been labeled as curvy, and when asked about the idea that model Daisy Lowe is curvy, from some, there's laughter.  Again, when voluptuous Kim Kardashian is the next questionable curvy figure,  "no one thinks she is anything other than miniscule".  Why is it laughable that these two women couldn't possibly be curvy?  When did size decide whether a figure has curves?

Kim Kardashian

Today another blogger friend has been dealing with body bullying on her own blog.  Despite her blog being there to help all women, size unbiased, she has been hit with a vicious barrage of vile hate speak, criticizing her feminine figure and larger bust.  People like this think it is okay to tread on others when seen as inferior.  This coming from a size 6 woman who thinks anyone a size 8-10 would look like 'a whale in her social circles'.

No size is superior.  Our bodies, whatever the number, are ours to be proud of and we all have the right to express our happiness in our own skin.  It means not to poke fun at what may be the opposite that you are.  It means to make all women feel good about themselves, even if we're not as meaty or skinny as we desire.  It doesn't mean that being bigger you have the authority to officially label someone else's body, as it isn't acceptable for a thin person to make someone feel like crap.

This viral image created an onslaught of complaints,
proving it isn't about 'skinny or fat'.

Curves aren't exclusive of the larger woman, and not all larger women can lay claim to being curvy, as any other body shape and size can and can't.  But what's most important - if we could even forget the term curvy exists - is we're all women, practically non of us are 100% body confident and we should support each other, not pigeon hole and point.
