I love bargain hunting but it can be difficult finding what's considered specialist bra sizes anywhere, let alone be able to buy them cheap.  We don't always have the cash to pay full retail price but when you want to update your lingerie, what's a girl to do?

If you're a bargain hunting busty girl like me you may be familiar with Brastop - the online destination for big bra bargains!

What's really great about Brastop is that there's always so much choice in a wide range of sizes (including 28 backs!) and the prices are incredibly low.  The reason the prices are lower than elsewhere is probably because the styles are predominantly last season but that's not necessarily a bad thing.  When you're looking for a specific collection that's no longer produced or simply looking for an affordable new bra set, you really can't fault them.  But, if you just want the current looks, you can get them here too.

Check out Brastop's huge D+ range and get an exclusive 10% off!  Simply use code: 'Becky10' when requested at the checkout.
Offer expires 2nd Aug 2013.

Brastop are pretty unashamedly cheeky and proud of their assets, so much so they offer their beautiful customers the chance to be Brastop models with their Model of the Month competition.  I bet when Freya Pibworth entered last January's competition she never thought she'd end up in a video flaunting her best bits!

This is Brastop's nod to 'Russell Howard's Good News' title sequence only with a bra and pants clad paper model instead of Russell.  I think Freya has much more fun in this video...

Brastop kindly sent me the beautiful Curvy Kate Portia in the latest season's colour, Seafoam.  The dreamy aqua green is a stunning shade for summer and the raspberry pink ribbon trim just gives it a juicy edge.  Such a gorgeous colour combo.

I wanted to try a Curvy Kate because I've not yet fully checked out the brand.  There's usually speculation about sizing and knowing just what to order, so it was helpful to review the latest design.  I ordered a 28H in the bra and size 12 bottom.

Portia is a light weight, unpadded balcony bra with a soft handle mesh fabric embroidered with a fancy diamond pattern.  The lower two sections of the cups are double layered with the upper section a sheer panel trimmed with laced ribbon and broderie anglais.

The set fits really well and is super comfy.  The knickers are a short and, although lower than I usually would wear, they are fantastic on the butt!  I am really quite happy wearing them.

The band is a firm fit and spot on for size.  The cups fitted beautifully with all fabric laying flat and with no gaping but I was disappointed by the strap separation.  The bra seems widely set with the straps hanging on the edge of my shoulders, which isn't desirable.

I'd tried seafoam Portia earlier in the year but didn't get to sample the 28H, instead a 30GG.  I remember actually liking the fit and feel of the 30GG but wanted to compare with the 28H, thinking the latter would be the better fit, but I'm not so sure.  It appears the cups and straps here are broader on my body, possibly an effect of the band stretching.  The bra also seems unsupporting with a flattening effect rather than lifting, like the weight of my bust is pulling the bra down (although it doesn't feel like that.)

I've commented about the strap separation of Curvy Kates before, and I'm not convinced designs have changed to remedy the problem.

Is it possible to find a Curvy Kate that sits further onto your shoulders?  What do you think?

So, it's decided (I decided) that Mr BB and myself are overdue a spa day.  I haven't been to a spa for three years now and I've never been with the other half before, so to say we're overdue it is an understatement.  I'm looking forward to swimming in the pool, chilling out in a jacuzzi and sweating it out in a sauna, and some treatments would be rather nice too, such as a massage and a facial.  All that needs to be done is book up with the right spa package and, oh, sort out the issue that is wardrobe!

Champney's Springs in Leicestershire - ooh yes please!

With spas, it doesn't matter whether you're a swimsuit wearer or prefer a bikini, what's more important is making sure you choose the right one for you that makes you feel confident about yourself and importantly, comfortable.  After all, what's the point in worrying about ties coming loose when you're meant to be relaxing?

Not all swimwear is the same so it's wise to thoroughly fit and check out your suit before the big day.  These pointers might help you out:

  • Check your suit's not see through when wet (no nipples or pubic hair on show)

  • Ensure the bottom doesn't ride up between your cheeks.  No one likes a wedgie.

  • Can you can fasten fiddly ties or clasps yourself?

  • Boob slips can happen - prevent it!  Bounce and move around, do your boobs stay in place?

  • You don't want shoulder or neck pain from too tight straps - adjust to a comfortable tension now before you go.

Here are my top favourites of swimwear perfect for a spa day.  Hmm, which to choose?...

Freya 'Fever' Bikini Top

Kelly Brook 'Pink Rose' Bikini Top

Curvy Kate Moonlight Bikini Top

Lepel Capri Swimsuit
Figleaves, £38

And which did I choose?  The Freya Fever bikini!  I bought the gorgeous blue colourway from Leia Lingerie in a 28GG in the plunge style with medium brief bottoms.  It fits perfectly; the plunging cups are perfectly positioned and super flattering.  I was wise to order the 28GG as opposed to the H too as the cups are just the right size.  All I need now is my spa!

My recent experience with Curvy Kate's Princess bra wasn't the success I'd hoped for.  I'd found the fit very broad with straps that teetered on the edge of my shoulders.  I absolutely loved the style and the berry colour was just delicious so I was immensely disappointed that I couldn't wear Princess.  I was soon to see a glimmer of hope, however, since my post last week prompted Curvy Kate to inform me that corrections had been made to the design of Princess.  Armed with this knowledge, I was encouraged to seek out a new Curvy Kate release to judge for myself whether the fit indeed had been improved on.  My visit to Bravissimo earlier this week gave me the perfect chance to again try on Curvy Kate for size.

On Bravissimo's website I noticed they sold both the Princess and Portia collections, so I was frustrated to find only the Portia in store.  It wasn't much use being told I could order it online as the chance to try on garments at Bravissimo is the reason why I opt to go into the store.  Never mind, I thought, there's still Portia.  Wrong!  For some reason, Bravissimo don't stock Portia in a 28 back, yet I'm led to believe Curvy Kate do produce Portia in a 28.  I'm slightly confused why Bravissimo would choose to size from a 30 back when they are usually the first stockist you'd think of when looking for small back bras.

I would have tried the 28H but since that wasn't available the assistant suggested I tried the 30H instead.  I'm sure I grimaced when she said this, having a huge inkling that it would be quite a bit too big, but I agreed hesitantly and asked for 28H sister size 30GG to try on too.

Now, I'd never tried on Portia before and hadn't seen it for real, either.  In reality, Portia is a really pretty, intricate design and this season's new colour, Seafoam, is a really appealing looker.  I was relieved to find that when I put (30GG) Portia on, the straps sat in a good position on my shoulders.  The band was also firm but not uncomfortable and the cups fully encasing.  I loved the look and the feeling.

I tried the 30H on just to compare and surprisingly struggled at first to see the difference.  With several photos taken at varying angles it soon became apparent - the shape of the cups gave it all away.  The 30H was too loose to support my bust properly, creating a dropped shape.  Comparing to the 30GG, you see the lift and firmness; a much better fit.

There's also slight wrinkling along the mesh of the cups of the 30H and also space just beneath where the straps begin, showing the 30H is marginally too big.

I was so impressed with the fit of the 30GG I seriously considering buying it but I didn't, purely because I didn't have a 28H, or 28HH to compare it to.  When I generally wear a 28 back I like to be sure a 28 is beyond wearability before I consider looking at a 30.  This refers me back to my earlier point, why Bravissimo don't stock 28 back Portia?  It's a mystery to me, and as such I continue with my quest: to find the best fitting Curvy Kate I can.

I hadn't tried a Curvy Kate bra for a while, with the last design I bought being the Criss-cross, which didn't work out for me.  I've always had my eye on the brand though because there's always something new to catch your eye, whether a fresh new collection or just another yummy range of colours.

I've long wanted to give another style a go so when I saw recently that Brastop was having a January sale I decided it would be the perfect time to try Curvy Kate out again.  With quite a few collections and colour ways to choose from it took me a while to decide which bra to go for.  The only bit that had me stumped was the sizing which I'd heard was a case of trial and error.  I loved the look of Princess thanks to it's girly velvet polka dot design but having heard funny stories about the cups I decided to jump right in and order a 28HH, a cup larger than I usually wear.  This is a past season colour in wine which is just a gorgeous, deep fruity shade.

I was so excited for the delivery of my bra and thankfully it didn't take long at all: only a matter of a few days!  When I opened up the parcel I knew Princess was a beauty.  It's light and unpadded with delicate detailing and sheer mesh panels.  I couldn't wait to try it on.

The fit is both good and better than expected in certain areas, but also truly disappointing.  The 28 band was a perfect fit, tight but not silly tight.  The back fastener was a 3 way hook and eye with a deep band so really well designed for support.  I adjusted the straps to a comfortable length and didn't find the half adjustable straps a problem; the length was plenty sufficient for me.  Once my fit was sorted I was able to figure out what the bra both looked and felt like and this was where it all went to pot for me.

Curvy Kate Princess in 28HH

The first negative I recognised immediately was the breadth of the straps; they were way too far apart, so much so they were slipping right off my shoulders.  This in turn meant the cups cut too deep around my underarm allowing me no room for movement.  It was really uncomfortable.  It seemed this bra wasn't designed with slight frames or sloping shoulders in mind.

The too far apart straps and cutting in

The cups were also not agreeable.  My left boob is the bigger of the two and felt perfectly okay within the cup, but my other side was swamped with visible unfilled fabric beneath my boob and to the side.
Considering this, I would be tempted to try the 28H although I'd worry the back would be made too tight, or be inadequate for my larger boob.

The under filled right cup

I'm so gutted that Princess wasn't 'fit for a princess' in my case.  I have heard it's a tricky style to fit, so I guess I may have to live with the fact that this Curvy Kate wasn't made for me.

Have you have similar experiences with Curvy Kate and Princess in particular?  Is there a better, fail safe style from Curvy Kate?

Red lingerie must be the most gifted shade of underwear.  Not surprising, considering men love to buy it for their special woman in their life and women feel pretty darn good wearing it.  Red lingerie defines seduction and luxury and as such deserves to be given the gift wrapped treatment on more occasions than Valentines.  Being a fantastically festive colour, Christmas is the perfect excuse.

With only a few days to go until Christmas Day itself, now's your last chance to treat yourself or your special lady to some special lingerie.  Luckily there are many options for D cups and above.

These are my favourites for stunning Christmas gifts >

The gorgeous Dita Von Teese lingerie brand, Von Follies (which you can buy from Debenhams as well as other stores), stars the exquisite Red Eyelash Lace bra RRP £30.00.  This is a beautiful collection that includes knickers and suspender belt.  Sadly only up to a DD but I had just had to include this beauty!

Masquerade Rosetti is still on my list!  It's a beautiful design and flattering balcony shape.  RRP £40.

Wonderbra has released the Ultimate Strapless Lace in a vibrant red - perfect for a feisty feeling under your strapless party dress this Christmas!  RRP £36

Boux Avenue Alexus is a luxurious silk and lace treat, available up to a G cup.  RRP £30.00

Curvy Kate Wild bra is a unique design this Christmas featuring red satin, animal print and gold trimmings which work surprisingly well.  RRP £29.00

Cleo Marcie is a stunning bra in a true festive bold red.  RRP £25.00

Santa is bringing me this bra for Christmas and he allowed me to try it on specially for this post.  (Thanks Santa!)

I'm usually a 28H in both Freya and Masquerade, but I'm finding with Cleo a 28GG fits much better.  So, judging by my experience with Cleo's Meg in a 28H, I ordered the 28GG for the Marcie.  It fits perfectly!

The band is just how I like it, firm but not overbearing.  The back fastening is only double hook and eye but it works very well and isn't narrow.  The style is balcony which cuts nicely over my bust.  It's not full covering so allows a nice shelf of cleavage.  The straps are ribbed, which I love, and they're wide enough without looking frumpy.

I liken Marcie to Cleo's best selling Lucy.  The cup fitting is very similar with the same three sections and lace panel.  Where Lucy has flowers Marcie has spots which I love.  The centre bow also has the addition of a cute tiny button.  What's different in the bra structure is the band which continues around the whole bra beneath the under wiring, providing additional support to the front.  I think it makes it look a lot more attractive too.

I fell in love with Marcie ever since I first saw it online but I was wary about how it would fit considering some reviews I'd read.  My experience has been extremely positive which I'm relieved to report.  Something I had to do with my Cleo Lucy was amend the centre gore by stitching it closer together to fit my close set boobs.  I haven't needed to do this with Marcie which is just perfect.  The band is as I'd expect and the bra is just really good fitting; it looks good and feels great to wear.  I fully recommend you give this one a go!

Have you asked Santa for anything red this Christmas?  Or do you prefer another colour?

My last post regarding the Curvy Kate competition, Star in a Bra, was well received.  Well, maybe not as positively as some people may have liked it, but it certainly hit some nerves.  That wasn't exactly my intention but I definitely wanted people to sit up and listen.  I do think that my comments were misconstrued and that quite a few people missed my point.  I think I need to clarify.

I have been battling the conquest to find the right bra size for some years now.  I've been wearing a bra since I was 13 - that's seventeen years ago! - and I've never felt I've quite got to grips with my true size until this year.  My first bra was a 34B.  How wrong that was!

In the past year I've been wearing a 32F but in recent months (even weeks) it's been established that I'm actually a 28GG-H.  To know that all these years I've been cluelessly buying wrong sizes that the simple math to finding one's real size is hugely in part down to not 'plus fouring' is amazingly simple.  Yet this little piece of information is not channeling its way through our bra manufacturers to our stockists to our women.  We are still measuring wrongly and wearing totally out of proportion sizes and that can only affect the national averages of sizes.

One massive problem is down to the sizes stores stock.  What sizes a manufacturer will produce is a matter in it's own, but what help is it if a brand physically makes a wide variety of sizes if the shops aren't stocking them?  The effect of the non stocking of smaller back sizes means fitting consultants are fitting to what the shop has rather than what the customer needs, and hence the cycle continues.

Referring back to my comments on Star in a Bra, I said slim girls with big boobs are not being represented.  By this I mean girls who are not carrying excess weight, they're slender and healthy and they have big boobs (maybe even hips).  When I said smaller back sizes need to be publicised more, by result of re-educating of the proper way to fit a bra, so many people across the world would find that they aren't indeed the 32 or 34 back size they believed, and more realistically a 26, 28, or 30.  So there's the mis-education of bra fitting and then there's a specific body type - slim with big boobs - to push home to the public.  But the arguement further complicates with the fact that even someone with a small back size can be carrying more body fat than is right for the body.  (And coming from a model's perspective, you have to have a fit body for your shape.) Simply labeling all women with big boobs as curvy is really not the way to go about it, but this is what some people can not understand when I say it.

Many of the comments in response to my controversial post said I was being negative toward larger body types when an attack on larger women is not what I intended.  I am not a hater.  I am purely saying slim girls with big boobs are not being represented.  Skinny people can be curvy too (see blog Thin and Curvy); the term 'curvy' is not a descriptor for 'larger woman'.  Curvy Kate's own model, Laura Butler (runner up in the first Star in a Bra competition in 2009) made a comment on Curvy Kate's Facebook page proving my point that it's still not being heard and understood, saying 'And you say skinny girls are judged and put down... well welcome to the past 20 odd years of curvy girls being put down'.  This basically means skinny girls are in one corner, curvy, or larger women, are in the other.  Skinny can be curvy too!!

Referring back to my comment yesterday that skinny girls in the media are chastised and larger women are now heralded as the true curvy woman, again CK's Laura Butler commented saying of the said slim girl with big boobs that 'that is not wanted by the public'. I disagree.  As I keep saying about proper fitting, if more girls knew their proper bra size then there would be bigger demand for the smaller back bras.  If women don't know they don't ask and they don't have an opinion.  There are lots of girls out there who fall into the category of 'slim girl with big boobs' without knowing it.

My point, or arguement if you will, still stands: the word curvy is not just associated with the larger woman but includes slim girls too.  The Curvy in the Curvy Kate should embrace these girls more because with excellent education through the huge publicity Star in a Bra draws, they would be onto a winner and redefining the larger cup industry.

Tuesday, March 20, 2012

I had a dream last night that I was looking at the top 30 selected girls for the Curvy Kate competition, Star in a Bra, and vividly saw myself in the line up but needless to say in reality I didn't make it.  Today they made the list of potential model wannabes live on their Facebook application and I was gutted I wasn't there, although part of me wasn't too surprised (just very disappointed).

The Curvy Kate brand is targeted at women who wear a D+ bra, and as the name suggests, women with a curvy figure.  The word curvy is a highly debatable definition.

To me, curves are boobs and bum.  A woman with an hourglass figure perhaps, because the body line draws out at the boobs, in at the waist, and out again at the hips, creating that curvy line.  I definitely don't like the term curvy being lumped into the same category as overweight women.  I'm not a body shape hater but I believe all too often the larger woman is heralded as the perfect 'curvalicious' woman while the slimmer woman is knocked for being too thin, labeled as anorexic and tarnished as a bad role model to girls.  The fact is that even though there are women who naturally have a smaller frame, and yes some may have a weight related illness, in today's age it's all the more common for the bigger figure, and yes, many times it is down to being overweight, or obesity.  Society has made it okay to bully skinny girls but protect and lavish big women.

Following the Curvy Kate Star in a Bra brand since it's advent in 2009 I've not seen a woman representing the company with a skinny figure but with big boobs.  I'm not saying their models are obese, the Curvy Kate girls have fantastic figures, but there's a continuing trend in the fuller cup market for the models to be bigger all over, not just in the bra department.  There are girls out there who have big busts and skinny waists but where are they in the media?

The only time I noticed a change was when the Star in a Bra competition was launched for the first time in Australia and the winner was petite size 8 FF cup Julia McLean.  This is the kind of woman we need more of.

Australia's Star in a Bra, Julia McLean

Browsing the Star in a Bra top 30 list of images I find myself seeing the same typecast fuller figure.  There are some stunning girls though and I very much wish these girls get ahead of the game and represent the slimmer girl with a bigger bust.  Good luck girls!

It's Spring and it's March and that can mean only one thing:  Curvy Kate is back with their annual Star in a Bra competition for 2012!

Curvy Kate is a relatively new brand to the lingerie market having only been on the scene for a few years but their impact has been phenomenal.  For a long time women who need larger sized bras have been crying out for a new direction and Curvy Kate's bi-annual collections definitely deliver, continuing to push out great looking bras at reasonable prices and by making their range accessible for most larger cupped girls, including the notoriously difficult to pin down 28" back.

The Star in a Bra competition's aim is to find a fabulous real woman to model the bras and show that what is commonly considered as 'what make's a model' is simply a load of balls.  The competition is open to any woman who's a D or above cup bra, no matter what your figure is, so there's no excuse not to enter if you're a fuller bust like me!

This time last year when I applied I was a 32F.  Now I'm a 30G and armed with my fabulous lingerie, including a Curvy Kate bra.

I kept my hair naturally wavy to emphasise my natural look and I look confident and proud to be curvy in the photos.  I've just submitted my entry so hopefully it will be approved!

Here's a sneak peek at one of the photos that I submitted:

In this picture I'm wearing my new peach and aqua colour Freya bra and a pair of frilly Miso briefs which I'd not got round to wearing until now.

But this is me totally untweaked and unedited.  I just hope my confidence and playful attitude come across to the judges!

What do you think of my photo?  Have you yourself just submitted your entry?

I'm in a window shopping mood and finding some seriously fierce DD+ bras!  I seem to be in a constant state of bra ogling, lusting over spankingly beautiful pieces that not only look super fine but feel super comfy too.

That's the problem with needing a larger cupped bra, yes it's great an' all to be blessed with amazing 'bangers' as Gok like's to call them, but bigger boobed girls do have to consider functionality along with gorgeous appeal.  Unfortunately you can not gauge whether a bra will fit nicely until you actually try it on.

So, fittings aside, all for the pretties, here's my 5 Spring favourites for you to coo over with me:

Freya Ashlee Sorbet Moulded Plunge Bra
 28-38 B-GG £34.00 RRP

Figleaves Sophina Vintage Rose Full Cup Bra
32-38 D-G £30.00

Curvy Kate Angel, Bluebell White Balconette Bra
28-40 D-K £28.50

Miss Mandalay Paige, Coral Balconette Bra
28-38 D-GG £36.00

Cleo Lucy, Yellow Balconette Bra
28-28 D-J £25.00

What do you think of my Spring-like choices?

Do you like a pretty soft colour bra?  Or do you prefer your lingerie wardrobe to be dark and sensual?  Or just the basic white, black and nude?

I would say that Spring has sprung but judging by today's dank weather, you'd think we were way back in late Autumn. The fog has been so heavy and it just makes everything feel dreary and miserable. Not a good feeling!

Despite the lack of that spring feeling in the air, my modelling clothing boxes certainly received their spring clean! It was time to tidy, reorder and out with the old and in with the new. Bits and pieces which I don't want to keep reappearing in shoots are to be sold on which will clear some space, and I stress the 'some' (!) I hadn't realised just how many beautiful new additions I've been buying recently so it was good to go through pieces properly. They'll be worn in due course, which I'll of course share with you.

The black lace bunny ears finally arrived today, which I'm very excited about. I'm planning on creating a dark, high fashion lingerie look, incorporating the ears with some stockings, killer heels and a bra or corset. We shall see how the idea develops! Any make up artists who would like to do me a smokey eye look are urged to get in contact. I love having a good team when working on exciting ideas. Which of course I have plenty of!

The Curvy Kate Star in a Bra competition ends in precisely an hour and three quarters' time. I may do this for a living but I'll be beyond ecstatic to get into the top 30 and have the opportunity to model for such a fab international label. We shall see :-)

Wednesday, March 9, 2011

It's that time of year again when Curvy Kate, leading lingerie manufacturers for those with a larger bust, launch the hotly anticipated competition in the lingerie industry - the search for their annual Star in a Bra!

Me being the ever game and curvy gal, couldn't wait to get my own pictures sent in. Armed with my most fabulous underwear I let Sean loose to snap away - and I loved it! Curvy Kate love their girls to show their confidence in their own skin and smile, and all who know me and have had the pleasure to work with me (!) know just how much of a big kid I am and how I love to have fun on my shoots and SMILE! :-) Let's hope they're looking for someone with a real woman's figure and chirpy personality such as my own! The competition draws to a close in less than 6 days time, so fingers crossed. x

Today I've been planning what shoots I'd personally like to do and I'm really quite excited about what I've come up with. A couple of shoots rely on the arrival of some props which I'm awaiting from the wonderland that is eBay. I squealed like a mouse when I found one of these items, something I've been sniffing out for what's felt like aaaaages. I will share more with you later on.....

Also today I took the plunge of stripping my hair. Sounds scary, which I admit was when I started applying the liquid - it smelled awful! - but this basically meant the removal of all permanent colourings out of my hair and returning it, supposedly, back to its original colour. I thought it odd that no colour was actually washing out during the rinsing processes but it must have been going somewhere because my hair was changing shade. I've now got some very lovely ginger sections amongst my brunette mane (I say with with slight sarcasm), which can only mean the red which the L'oreal team applied for the Autumn Winter '10 show last year had been put on prelightened hair. I'm guessing. Well as long as when I come to colour it again in a week or so's time, it's all evenly chocolatey, I'm happy! We shall see, ay?
